Allan Bérubé was an acclaimed American historian, activist, independent scholar, and college lecturer who focused on the lives of gay men and women. His primary contribution to the field was “Coming Out Under Fire”, a book exploring the experiences of gay military members during World War II which won several awards. Another notable product of his work is a documentary film based on the book, also titled “Coming Out Under Fire”, produced in 1994. His second major work was “My Desire for History: Essays in Gay, Community, & Labor History”, a collection of essays published posthumously. The crucial distinction between these works is that the first is a historical account of gay military personnel while the latter is a compilation of essays dealing with multiple facets of gay history. All these works reflect Bérubé’s overall research interest in gay and lesbian history, but each product offers unique perspectives on different aspects of the topic.
